Recently I had a major breakthrough in my illustration process! Woohoo! And the weirdest part is that it is nothing new. Basically, I realized I need to treat my professional work the same way I treat my sketchbook. And so instead of focusing on colors, I shifted my focus to values (values are how dark or light something is). So I essentially created a black and white image in pencil (except it was red and white because I just really like my red pencil). Then I took it into photoshop and added color with some fun blending modes. I am so excited about the finished product and am equally pumped to move forward with a new workflow! P.S. Sterling Hundley’s work for Babette’s Feast was a huge influence in finding this new color treatment! Definitely check out his work!!
